I am a big advocate of the benefits of walking. I love to walk. I walk my dog. I walk and talk with Tim and my friends and I walk often to meditate and also to work out things in my mind. Today, I had the chance to walk with my daughter Emma in the Shades of Pink Walk at The Detroit Zoo. The Shades of Pink Foundation offers temporary financial assistance to women battling breast cancer during their time of need.
When I woke up this morning it was pouring rain and I was still tired, but I agreed to wake Emma up at a certain time to get ready for the walk. When I first woke her up she said that she hadn’t felt that well during the night and I told her it was raining heavily and that we didn’t have to go if she really wanted to sleep in because our donation would still be beneficial. In less then a minute later she sat up and said, “Let’s go”, I agreed and finished getting ready. As I was getting dressed, I started to think of the very hard road so many women have endured fighting breast cancer. They got up every morning and showed up for life each day during many tough times.
As we drove to the Zoo the rain was really heavy but we were prepared with raincoats and umbrellas. As we checked in, the skies began to clear and we did not feel one more raindrop the whole walk. It was inspiring to see the strong participation despite the inclement weather. I think the weather was an amazing metaphor for the experiences many women have had battling breast cancer from the dark to the light and I felt so grateful to take part in this meaningful event with my daughter.
We all have different paths in our lives but if we can come together for a common purpose it makes all of our lives richer and good health is a gift every day. Ask any breast cancer survivor and anyone who has faced a life-threatening illness. Here is a link to the Shades of Pink Foundation website if you want to help women battling breast cancer and celebrate good health too. http://www.shadesofpinkfoundation.org/page/page/2361028.htm
A lovely entry and sentiments about life. I am motivated to walk this morning. Oh, but it's SNOWING
in MI on April 18th. I think stretching and meditating at home is in the cards today. :)
